SUMMARY:Soft Sculpture: Zaftig Fire Fairy Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This is a two-class soft sculpture workshop that will take place on July 18 and 25\, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. \nWhat is soft sculpture? There are many ways to do it\, but as an introduction I will be teaching the techniques of tracing/sewing (on a machine)\, stuffing and decorating a cloth doll made from a commercial pattern. I will also bring several books from my library and photos of some of my creations to show off the world of ‘art dolls.’ Hopefully this will inspire others to pursue this fun art.\nI will bring two sewing machines\, but it would be helpful if participants could bring their own.\nMachines need to only be able to do a small straight stitch. If you have a Singer featherweight….they are perfect! \nParticipants are asked to bring a fat quarter (18 X 22.5″) of fabric and thread to match. Sturdy quilting cotton is fine. The sample is made from synthetic molecloth. The artist recommends hand dyed fabric. \nSupplies Fee: $20 ~ The kit will include a pattern (https://www.fabric-chicks.com/shop/Dolls-and-Crafts/elinor-peace-bailey-Dolls/p/epb-Zaftig.htm)\nStuffing\nFusible Interfacing\nButton Thread\nFray Check\nSome novelty fiber and or wire ribbon.\n#7 Darner\nColorful mohair or feathers for ‘hair.’ \nInstructor: Saragrace Knauf\nI was born\, second of three children\, to a family of modest means. Both my parents (now deceased) worked in the theatrical arts. My father was a director\, dramaturg\, and actor. My mother was both an actor and director. I\, wanting to avoid the academic life and poverty\, steered as far from the theater as I could. I am retired from commercial nuclear power\, where I worked as a mechanical engineer. I married my second husband when I was thirty-four. No kids\, lots of animals. My hobbies include historic costuming\, gardening (horsebackriding-not anymore!)\, an’ dollin’ (softsculpture and needlefelting). \nPlease RSVP so that we can plan for enough supplies. If your plans change after registering\, please let us know if you cannot attend so we may offer the space to another. You will also have an option to make a donation to support continued free arts programming for Kamiah and beyond. You can bypass this option by just hitting “Continue”. You will be able to put in the names of everyone in your group and you will also receive email confirmation of your registration and event reminders. \nThank you in advance for being on time. We look forward to seeing you in the studio!

SUMMARY:Artist's Way Group / Sanity Journaling
DESCRIPTION:This is an ongoing group that meets every two weeks 1-3 p.m. Saturdays. \nTogether\, we explore The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron\, a program designed to help people overcome creative blocks and reconnect with their inner artist through a series of readings\, exercises\, and tools like “Morning Pages” (three pages of stream-of-consciousness writing) and “Artist Dates” (solo creative outings). \nWe also explore self-expression through Sanity Journaling\, a creative practice developed and refined by Alina Bettancourt over many years. This class invites participants to explore their inner world through artful journaling—combining words\, images\, and color to create a deeply personal reflection of life\, dreams\, and emotions. \nThere is no right or wrong way to do this. Each page becomes a space for authenticity\, play\, and self-discovery. Whether the process feels lighthearted or profound\, every mark and collage piece contributes to a unique story—your own. \nParticipants will experiment with a variety of materials\, including magazine cut-outs\, paint\, markers\, pencils\, and pens. The journal can hold affirmations\, meaningful quotes\, personal insights\, memories\, or simply serve as a creative playground for new artistic techniques. \nThis is a space free of judgment and full of encouragement. The goal is to honor individuality\, embrace imperfection\, and celebrate the beauty of self-expression. \nBring your curiosity\, your imagination\, and your heart! \n\nSUPPLIES\nAlso bring your journal! We recommend this 8.5 x 11 blank page sketchbook.\nWe also recommend getting a copy of The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. You can order a used copy from Ebay or Amazon for about $5.\n\nAlina Bettancourt is a lover of creating beauty in the world through art. She enjoys creating with different media\, and her favorite is loose watercolor painting. She is a retired marriage-family therapist (MFT)\, a physical fitness trainer\, developer of BIW (a meditative exercise program)\, and recently is a certified Primal Reflex Release Technique practitioner (PRRT). Alina is a mother of 6 grown kids and 13 grandchildren. She lives a quiet cabin life in Clearwater\, Idaho\, fully enjoying many winter hours of guilt-free painting.
