SUMMARY:Intermediate Needle Felting: Bunny
DESCRIPTION:Needle felting is a fun and relaxing craft that can be enjoyed by anyone\, regardless of their experience with other kinds of art. Needle felting uses unspun wool to create small animals and objects\, or flat pictures that can be framed. In this class we will create a bunny\, which requires a more advanced technique to make the fur so it is recommended that you have had at least one felting class. \nPlease bring a pair of very sharp scissors – all other supplies will be provided. This class will dive into the different types of wool and the breeds of sheep who produce them. While you felt\, learn about some rare and heritage breeds\, and how to choose the right wool for your project out of the hundreds of different types. There will be wool from specialty and rare breeds available for you to make your bunny with. \nInstructor Lauren Graves lives in Kooskia\, where she enjoys creating crafts\, painting\, and writing novels. She is an award-winning needle felting artist and professional felting instructor. Her felting classes have been hosted in Grangeville\, Kamiah\, and Craigmont. \nClass Supply List:\n(Please note that these supplies will be provided for you to keep at the time of the class.) \nNeedle felting mat (foam\, wool\, or natural fiber mats are recommended for beginners)\n2-3 leather finger protectors\nSeveral felting needles (you will need at least a large\, such as a 36 triangle\, a medium\, such as a 38 star\, twist\, or triangle\, and a small\, such as a 40 triangle)\nApprox. 1/4 ounce of core wool\n(2) 9mm plastic eyes\nSmall bit of pink and black carded wool\nApprox. 1/2 ounce of natural or dyed wool roving from a variety of breeds \nClass Cost: $35 per person (for supplies)\nThere is a $15 discount for students who bring their own mat\, finger protectors\, and needles. If you bring your own supplies\, you will be refunded $15 at the time of the class. Wool will be provided for everyone. \nDue to the very sharp needles\, this class is for ages 12 and up\, and kids under 16 years old should be accompanied by an adult. \nPlease RSVP for this class with the form below. In addition to the $35 supplies fee\, you will have an option to make a donation to support River Arts. You can bypass this option by hitting “Continue”. The system treats the RSVP and contact info as separate things so you will need to enter that twice. You will be able to put in the names of everyone in your group and you will also receive email confirmation of your registration and event reminders. SUMMARY:Pysanky: Ukrainian Egg Decorating
DESCRIPTION:Pysanky are the complex-design Easter eggs that are a traditional Ukrainian craft. They are dyed eggs\, with the designs built up in layers using a batik-type method. Wax pens cover each color in the design as the eggs are dipped in dyes. Local artist Kris Hazelbaker will lead an exploration into this art form. \nThe class will cover a little history of pysanky – the different styles and some of the meanings of the symbols. We will have an overview of the process\, from bare egg to finished decorated egg – drawing the design in pencil\, writing with wax over the part of the egg to be kept white\, which dyes to use in which order\, and finishing the egg by blowing out the inside and removing the wax writings. Then we will all have an opportunity to make our own using a simple design from a book. Kris will provide a “resources” sheet\, with the sources she uses for dyes\, wax pens\, and pattern books. \nKris has always admired these eggs with their intricate designs\, and when a friend turned out to be an expert in pysanky\, she got her chance to learn the basics. “Several books and LOTS of eggs later\, I am finally making pysanky eggs that I am proud of.” \nAges 15 and up \nFREE ~ Please note this class begins at 9 am. \nPlease RSVP for this class with the form below. The class is free and you will also have an option to make a donation to support continued free arts programming for Kamiah and beyond. You can bypass this option by hitting “Continue”. The system treats the RSVP and contact info as separate things so you will need to enter that twice. SUMMARY:Developing Classic Skills of Observational Drawing
DESCRIPTION:Fundamentals: Learn to See and Practice Drawing Basic Shapes. Introduction of various drawing materials. Plus\, introduction of 20-25 art terms.  Observational drawing is drawing from sight\, looking at subject matter and drawing a likeness. We will practice looking at and drawing three-dimensional forms on the two-dimensional surface. Learn about the physical relationship of eyes\, hands\, space\, distance\, depth perception\, posture\, and practice\, along with the process of personal interpretation and style development. \nThis is not copying from a two-dimensional surface to another two-dimensional surface. This is not a course in copying the instructor. The long-term goal is artistic independence\, spontaneity\, and fluency. Develop confidence in drawing from sight. \nThis class is open to adults and high school students serious about drawing. \nMethods: Learn basic shapes. Demonstrations. Examples. Overview\, materials\, in-class work and practice ideas between classes. Slow draw\, quick draw. Tiny\, giant. Looking at your drawings. \nOut of class practice will include finding\, seeing\, and drawing basic shapes. Handouts\, video resources. \n9:30-noon Saturdays\, March 8-29: This four-session course will focus on seeing and drawing the basic shapes of spheres\, ovals\, cylinders\, cones\, rectangular shapes\, and cubes and developing perspective.  \nTwo of my favorite drawing books for classic skills are old books:  \nFreehand Drawing Self-Taught\, 1933\, Arthur L. Guptill \nThe Joy of Drawing\, 1959\, Gerhard Gollwitzer\, translated from German \nLesson 1 (March 8): Course Overview and Spheres \nExamples of basic shapes in artwork. Basic info\, drawing a simple sphere\, spheres in nature and the built environment. Hemisphere. Ellipses. Handout. Finding spheres. Oval forms. Line quality. Posture. \nLesson 2 (March 15): Cylinders and cones \nHow to draw cylinders and cones. Cylinders and cones in nature and the built environment. Using pencil as a plumb line. Concept of format. Viewfinder. Perspective. Eye level. Handout. Finding cylinders and cones\, indoors and out of doors. \nLesson 3 (March 22): Cubes and rectangular shapes \nHow to draw cubes and rectangular shapes. Point of view. Eye level. Concept of vanishing point. Pyramid. Handout. Finding cubes and rectangular shapes and vanishing points. \nLesson 4 (March 29): Combining Basic Shapes \nWays of achieving perspective. Formatting\, tabletop still life\, depth\, overlapping. Tiny\, giant. Grouping objects. Overview of terminology and ways of achieving perspective. \nReview\, closure. New insights about drawing and what you would like to do with these skills. \n—————- \nSandra’s career was teaching art to teens and adults. She is an Idaho Vandal and has a master’s degree and a PhD in Art Education from the University of Oregon. \nSandra grew up in Headquarters and Orofino and enjoys walking out of doors\, observing nature\, drawing and watercolor\, working in mixed media\, reading\, gardening\, homemaking\, and spending time with family and friends.  \nA challenge for 2025: learn how to play bridge! \nThese five examples start with drawing from sight using basic shapes. The materials used are pencils\, pens\, black and grey washes\, and/or watercolors: Before the Pie 12” x 9” (above)\, In the Kitchen 6” x 8 ½”\, Waiting at Hanson’s Garage 4” x 6”\, The Pantry 16” x 20”\, Hallway at the Mystic Café 5 ½” x 8 ½” \n \nPlease RSVP for this class with the form below. The class is free and you will also have an option to make a donation to support continued free arts programming for Kamiah and beyond. You can bypass this option by hitting “Continue”. The system treats the RSVP and contact info as separate things so you will need to enter that twice.
