SUMMARY:Contemporary Beadwork
DESCRIPTION:This four-week contemporary beadwork series (6-8 p.m. Tuesdays\, June 3-24) will teach you the basics of off-loom beadweaving using needle\, thread\, and seed beads. Each class will teach a beading stitch or concept with a pattern for a small piece of jewelry (ring\, pendant\, or earrings) which can be started in class and finished on your own time after class. The series is designed to build on the knowledge learned from the previous class so it is best taken in the series; however\, a confident beginner should be able to be successful with any individual class. Previous beadweaving experience is not required and any experience with hand sewing\, cross stitch\, or embroidery will be beneficial. \nAll supplies will be provided for a $10 supply fee per class: $40 total.\nClass 1: Even-count peyote stitch ring with daisy motif\nClass 2: Trinity necklace (folded flat triangle)\nClass 3: Warped Square earrings\nClass 4: Tri-Wing ring \n\n\n\nNOTE: Each of the first three classes can be taken as a stand-alone class with a $10 per class supplies fee (just bring the fee in person). With every stitched bead\, I incorporate structure\, form\, movement\, and color into my artwork to achieve bold statement pieces with unexpected surprises. \nIn the 90’s\, I wandered into a bead shop and bought a book on Native American beadweaving techniques and a few tubes of mixed seed beads. That was enough to start my love of beadweaving. This amazing creation never ceases to astound her and she spends time photographing\, sketching\, and painting the beauty. \nShe has worked as a fire lookout in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California\, a lifeguard\, a trail guide for a state park\, a folk singer in a restaurant\, motel maid\, swim instructor\, elementary school teacher in Hawaii and Oregon\, organic farmer in Hawaii\, and as a writer and illustrator of children’s books and other publications. She currently gives watercolor seminars at the Monastery of St. Gertrude in Cottonwood. Friends and family are paramount in her life. We will gather at the River Arts Studio (411 Main Street\, Kamiah) in case of rain \nWhat to bring: Your journal (if you don’t have one\, we can provide one). An attitude of discovery and creativity. One of your favorite nature poems or readings. A dish for the potluck if you plan to stay. \nWhat to expect: We will be heading into the park and have the opportunity to journal the many birds and blooms now with us in this time of spring. We will then come back to share our discoveries from our journals over a meal and fellowship. No pryor journaling experience required!
